Eight Rembrandt and five Van Gogh (plus Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Renoir, Raphael, etc.) paintings were among the many highlights for the seminar class students marking the trip to Los Angeles to tour two museums March 12-15. The group spent a full day at the J. Paul Getty and Norton Simon museums which house the two finest art collections in the western United States. The students also spent a day enjoying Disneyland and the California Adventure amusement parks.

SEMINAR CLASS SET TO DEFEND NATIONAL STOCK GAME TITLE

The 2015 Capitol Hill Challenge, a competition open to all U.S. high schools, got underway Feb. 2 and will run through May 8. Canyonville Christian Academy‘s seminar class students finished number-one out of over 4,000 entries in 2014. In the internet investing simulation game, students are given $100,000 to invest and real time stock bond, ETF, and mutual fund prices are used. Teams placing in the top-10 in the nation get an all-expense paid trip to tour Washington, DC, meet with their senators and representatives, and attend various award programs and seminars. CCA’s students won Washington trips in 2013 and 2014.

Math Instructor Named “Teacher Of The Year”

Mr. Luke Suhr, Canyonville Christian Academy’s head math teacher, was honored at the 2014 Mayfest (May 30) as the school’s top teacher. Mr. Suhr, in his second year here at the private school, teaches advanced math course through Calculus AP and honors statistics. The award is voted by the school’s Board of Administration.

Seminar Class Off and Running

September was a busy month for Canyonville Christian Academy’s seminar class students. Events included a play on the Elizabethan outdoor stage at the Shakespeare Festival (Ashland). This was followed by a viewing at Umpqua Community College of the British National Theatre modern version productions of “Othello”. The final field trip open to seminar students in September was a trip to the Oregon State versus Colorado football game which saw the OSU Beavers improve to a 4-1 record. Stock Pickers Number-One Private/Parochial School In U.S. Competition

Canyonville Christian Academy battled more than 3,000 entries in the 2012 national stock market and ended the 14-week game as the top-ranked private school in the country and placed 9th overall. Team members from the senior economics class included Kenny Chen, Jerry Hsiao and MinHo Jung. In the Spring Oregon Stock Market Game, CCA suffered a rare loss for the top spot to Jesuit of Portland. However, CCA’s econ students captured six of the top seven spots in the final standings. Top Pilot was Johnny Yuan. In the state investing competition, over 400 teams were entered. In the students’ “real money” investing account, the class earned more than $2,500 (42%) since January 1, 2012. This Christian Academy is one of only two high schools in Oregon with a substantial brokerage account, the other being St. Mary’s Academy of Portland.

Seminar Class Goes To Leadership Conference

Students from Canyonville Christian Academy‘s Seminar Class, taught by Roger Shaffer, attended the national Chick-Fil-A leadership conference May 4th, 2012 – a simulcast to 700 locations throughout the U.S. 125,000 people attended this 6 1/2 hour seminar. Featured speakers ranged from NFL – star Tim Tebow to Ivy League professors.

CCA LEADS STOCK COMPETITION

With just two weeks remaining in the Oregon high school stock market game, CCA”s investors are comfortably way out front. Micah Jocoy had made nearly 70% in just eight weeks to lead all Oregon stock pickers. Five other CCA entrants have made 25% or more. The top non-CCA entry is from Jesuit High School (Portland) with an 11% gain. There are nearly 400 entries in this Spring’s competition.

Welcome Weekend at CCA

This weekend starts the new school year, with teenagers flying in from all over the globe. Vans, cars, SUV’s are going to all major airports in Oregon welcoming and bringing these weary travelers to their destination – Canyonville Christian Academy for the 2010-2011 school year. Many years ago, when Dad Shaffer started this private boarding school, did the idea of International students every cross his mind? Today Canyonville Christian Academy houses students from as many as 20 different nations, that call this place home for 9 months of the year. They then take back home to their home country, a wealth of what CCA has taught them through out the school year. Many have new friends for life from different countries and from here on campus – teachers, deans, cooks and staff members. What opportunities are given here at CCA! Impacting nations as they also impact us.
