Rose Gilbert
It has been recently discovered that Canyonville Christian Academy’s Rose Gilbert’s 1972 Olympic Trials pentathlon mark of 3875 points set a NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL RECORD for that event.
According to statistics compiled and published by TRACK AND FIELD NEWS, Gilbert’s point total was not bettered until 1977 when Patsy Walker of Yelm, Washington bettered Rosie’s record. (The pentathlon is a five-event track and field competition used to determine the best all-around athlete. In recent years it has been superseded by the seven-event heptathlon.)

Rose Gilbert also won state individual titles and state meet records for 100 yards, 220 yards, 880 yards, long jump, and anchored the state record holding 880 yard medley relay team. She also set an unbroken state record at 440 yards and captured a state title in cross country. “Women’s Track & Field World” magazine called her one of the most versatile runners in the nation and “Sports Illustrated” ran a feature on her with a photo. She was also one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
