Canyonville Christian Academy’s Seminar class competes in the Oregon Stock Market Game and SIFMA’s National Capitol Hill Challenge.
Canyonville Christian Academy’s Seminar class is an excellent college preparatory course that enriches the academic lives of our students with knowledge and experience in culture and business. The Seminar class, taught by Roger Shaffer, covers subjects such as art, classical music, current world events, and the stock market. With many of the topics, students are then given the opportunity to experience what they have learned through trips to art museums, symphonies, and plays. They are also given the opportunity to participate in the Oregon and National Stock Market Games.
In the Stock Market Games, student teams of 3-5 students each are given a hypothetical online portfolio of $100,000 to invest in real stocks with the goal of earning the highest profit.
Canyonville Christian Academy’s Seminar class started the school year by first competing in the Oregon Stock Market Game. The Oregon Stock Market Game occurs twice a year with fall and spring competitions. It consists of 300-400 high school teams throughout Oregon and last 10 weeks. Canyonville Christian Academy has participated in these games since 1996. Out of the 25 times this private school has competed in the Oregon Stock Market Game, it has placed first 23 times! This year was no exception. Canyonville Christian Academy’s Eric Lee from South Korea captured a win in the 2014 Fall Oregon Stock Market Game with a profit of over 135%!
Now Canyonville Christian Academy’s Seminar class focuses on defending their title as National Champions of SIFMA’s Capitol Hill Stock Market Challenge. About 7,500 teams from across the United States make their investments over a 14 week period to vie for this prestigious title. The top ten teams of this challenge receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. During this trip students meet Representatives of Congress, attend seminars and an awards program at Capitol Hill, and tour the financial landmarks and national monuments of the capital of the United States.
Canyonville Christian Academy has competed in the Capitol Hill Challenge for five years and placed third in 2013 and first in 2014! The 2015 Capitol Hill Challenge began on February 2 and ends on May 8, 2015. Will Canyonville Christian Academy gain a victory for the second year in a row? Stay tuned!
